Establishment of college of fisheries was considered important for producing skilled manpower and strengthening the move to increase fish production by proper utilization of water bodies through the adoption of scientific technique more honestly. The college came in to existence on 13.01 1984 at TCA campus, Dholi, Muzaffarpur under the aegis of Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, Samastipur, with an intake capacity of 10 students every year.
The College is located about 25 km from Muzaffarpur on Muzaffarpur – Pusa road, in the campus of Tirhut College of Agriculture.
Aquaculture Laboratory, Fishery biology, Aquatic biology, Fisheries extension Laboratory and computer laboratory are presently in existence to support the practical aspect of the teaching programme.
For practical training on induced breeding of fish and production of quality fish seed, hatchery complex has been established. College is awaiting the operation of hatchery complex, which will enable it to fulfill the demand of major carp seed, desperately needed in this area.

- To improve quality and acceptability of various value added fishery products.
- To disseminate relevant scientific and advanced technology amongst the farmers
The college is offering 4 yrs programme leading to the degree of B.F. Sc. (Bachelor in Fisheries Science). Out of the total intake of 10 seats, admission of 8 students is taken on the basis of the result of combined competition entrance examination conducted by Govt. of Bihar every year. Admission for rest 2 seats is taken under ICAR quota. ICAR it self conducts entrance examination on All India basis.
The course curriculum pertaining to various aspects of fisheries science and technology being followed is based on the recommendation of Dean’s Committee with a total load of 162 credit hours, taught by 10 deptt. of the College, viz., Dept. of Fisheries Biology, Aquaculture, Aquatic Biology, Oceanography, Fishery Economics and Statistics Fishery Biochemistry, Fishery Microbiology, Fish Processing Technology, Fishery Engineering and Dept. of Fisheries Extension.
Till date 76 students have passed out from the College out of those 72 students, 42 have got employment in the fisheries dept of Govt. of Bihar as Fishery extension officer and District Fishery Officer. Others are either persuing their higher studies or have opted for NGO and other employment agencies.
RURAL FISHERIES WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME
Besides, theoretical and practical teaching up to 7 th semester, the students in 8 th semester are deputed outside the campus for practical training under Rural/Fisheries work Experience programme which covers several aspects of practical value viz., Socio-economic survey of fishermen, study of cooperative society, visit of processing plant, different fishing methods in inland and marine areas etc. They are paid Rs. 900 per month during this semester. The students are also sent for study Tour during this semester to the reputed fishery College, research institutions and extension centres existing in the State of Bihar and India particularly coastal areas for wider and detailed exposure in the field of Fishery Sciences and Technology.
